DLTK’s Crafts for Kids website has instructions on doing this simple fingerprint apple or cherry tree craft. It would probably be a fun project for Tiger or Wolf “Leaf It to Cubs” den meetings.

All the Cub Scout handbooks are now available in both paperback and coil-bound formats. The coil-bound books are $12.99 each which is about $6 more than the standard version.
It is very nice to have this option available as the coil-bound versions are much easier for Cub Scout leaders to use.

Download.com from CNET Networks is one of my favorite websites. It has tons of free software available for download, all tested to be virus and spyware-free.
Much of the software is trialware or shareware, but you can filter your results to show just the free programs by selecting “Free” on the license-type drop down list. (The default is “All licenses.”)
The site also features many helpful editor and user ratings.
Regardless of the type of program you need for Cub Scout administration (or whatever), if a free version exists, it is probably on download.com.

Arbor Day is an annual holiday that encourages planting and caring for trees. It is recognized in the U.S. on the last Friday of April which this year falls on April 25, 2008. Many states also have state Arbor Day holidays.
Having an Arbor Day tree-planting event with your Pack can dovetail nicely with May’s Cub Scout monthly theme of “Leaf It To Cubs“. Planting trees is a great way to encourage your boys to get out in, learn more about, and appreciate the great outdoors. It can also help them earn the World Conservation Award, the Cub Scout Outdoor Activity Award, or the Webelos Forester activity badge.
You can find out more about Arbor Day at the Arbor Day Foundation website.

The March-April 2008 issue of Scouting magazine is now available (free) on the web. Link
Here are some of the articles of particular interest to Cub Scouters:

If you’re looking for an inexpensive easy-to-read guide to U.S. trees while planning your “Leaf It to Cubs” activities, the Golden Guide Trees book is a good one. This small 160-page full-color book is an easy-to-carry introduction to the most commonly found trees in North America.
It is available for $6.95 plus shipping from Amazon.com.

The Arbor Day Foundation website has a lot of educational tree activities which would be fun for your Bears or Webelos. The free downloadable activities include “The Tree Chain Game” (how trees grow) and “Mystery Tree Challenge” (tree identification). (Theme: Leaf It to Cubs).

The Arbor Day Foundation website has a nice Tree Identification Guide to help with identification of common U.S. trees. It also includes an interactive animation to help you brush up on your tree identification skills. (Theme: “Leaf It to Cubs“)

The May 2008 (“Leaf It to Cubs“) Den Meeting in a Box is now available from BSA National (photo not available yet) for Tiger, Wolf, or Bear den meetings. It runs $37.49 and includes ten monthly theme booklets, ten Cub leaf charts, and ten monthly theme patches.

Here is another magic trick toy you may want to use for your “Abracadabra” activities. I’m not sure how this one works, but it looks like fun. It is $1.29 plus shipping from birthdayinabox.com.

Meritbadge.org has a great collection of free Webelos Activity Badge worksheets to help Webelos Scouts earn their Webelos Activity Badges. Each worksheet also contains links to helpful online resources including many instructional videos.
