The hour-by-hour forecast at the Weather Channel website is a great tool when planning outdoor events. It lets you know a specific forecast, including temperature and chance of precipitation, for every hour of the day for the next 48 hours or so.
It is particularly handy when precipitation is forecast. At least in this part of the country, when it rains, it usually does not rain all day long. It only rains for part of the day. So, for example, if your outdoor event is not scheduled to begin until 3 p.m., you may not care that it will be raining in the morning, as long as it has stopped by the time your event starts.
The hour-by-hour forecast was very helpful for an outing our pack held recently. We were planning an evening hike from 6 to 7 p.m. The forecast for the day was 80 percent chance of rain. There was a lot of discussion of whether we should cancel the event, but by looking at the hour-by-hour forecast, I saw that there was only a 30 percent chance that it would be raining during our hike.
So we didn’t cancel the event, and I think we made the right decision. As it turned out, the rain stopped around 3 p.m. that afternoon. We actually had some very nice hiking weather that evening.
