BSA national, the local scout shop staff, our Commissioner, and the current issue of Boys Life ALL say that its a mix-and-match process with the new gear. Also, it has always been BSA’s policy that once an item is approved for wear with the uniform it is ALWAYS ok to wear it. So, there is not need to rush out and buy all new uniforms, or to resist replacing only one item if it has become unserviceable or been outgrown. Remember, a Scout is Thrifty!

The May 2008 Centennial brochure (70-134) from BSA says “However, each piece transitions to mix and match with your current uniform.” That sounds pretty clear to me.

Is there something from BSA that says you can’t do that with the Centennial uniform?

Hey great site…
Just a correction if I may…
You may NOT mix and match uniform items. Hats, yes.. but you should not put the green numbers on the current uniform, nor should you wear the NEW pants with the old shirt.
You are allowed to wear uniforms until they are no longer servicable, but you should not mix and match.
Like you can not wear the old green pants with the red piping with the current shirt. It is outlined in the Insignia guide. [http://www.scouting.org/media/insigniaguide/01.aspx]
I say this not to rain on anyones parade, but when the uniform is worn the person in the uniform represents the BSA and therefore should wear it properly so as to promote the BSA in a positive and appropriate light.
The uniform is a method of the Scouting program and should be treated as all the methods and that is to say that it needs to be done right. This helps us achieve the Aims of Scouting.
