One of the best things that a parent can do for a child is to help him or her be prepared to decide on an adult occupation. All kids must eventually decide “What do I want to do when I grow up?“
At the link below is a helpful January 2000 Scouting magazine article discussing some things parents can do to help kids become more familiar with various career paths.
Some of the points the article makes are:
- Discuss with your child some career options that relate to the interests that he or she currently has.
- Don’t talk to kids about your current job in a negative way.
- Teenagers should be encouraged to “shadow” someone who works in the career field in which they are interested.
