According to recent Cub Scout Talk postings, the 2009-2010 Insignia Guide references the following new additions to the Cub Scout Academics and Sports Program:
1. Abilities Awareness (17861-Loop, 14700-Pin)
2. Family Travel (17862-Loop, 14701-Pin)
3. Good Manners (17863 – Loop, 14702-Pin)
4. Hiking (17865-Loop, 14707-Pin)
5. Hockey (17864-Loop, 14706-Pin)
6. Horseback Riding (17866 – Loop, 14708 Pin)
7. Pet Care (17869 – Loop, 14703-Pin
8. Photography (17870 – Loop, 14704-Pin)
9. Reading and Writing (17871-Loop, 14705-Pin)
10. Skateboarding (17867-Loop, 14709 – Pin)
11. Video Game (17868 – Loop, 14710-Pin)
The most intriguing of the new awards are probably those for skateboarding and video games.
The Insignia Guide does not contain the requirements for the new awards. Presumably, they will be provided in a forthcoming revision to the Cub Scout Academics and Sports Program Guide.

Has there been any discussion if they are planning to eliminate any of the existing beltloops?
Not that I have heard, but I really don’t know.
Any idea if these new beltloops will be incorporated into the various WEBELOS Activity Badges for 2009-2010?
Also: the inclusion of hockey is great, but it really makes the BSA stance on (tackle) Football and Martial Arts look inconsistent.
I would assume that hockey and skateboarding (and maybe horseback riding) could be used toward Sportsman.
But I have not seen any announcements.
Its tough to speculate without seeing the requirements but on the surface there’s a lot of potential. I could see Family Travel become part of TRAVELER; Good Manners an option for CITIZEN; Hiking could become a requirement for OUTDOORSMAN; Pet Care to FAMILY MEMBER; Photography to ARTIST; Reading and Writing to SCHOLAR.
My main concern was whether or not to advise the rising WEBELOS (parents) to hold off on purchasing handbooks until the Fall.
I was unaware the WEBELOS handbook was being updated as well. Not such great communication from National on these things. Given that we just bought $15 ring bound books… Hmmm…
I haven’t heard anything about new Webelos handbooks coming out soon (but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything).
Local scout shop is saying by end of November they will have the new belt loops and the requirement books.
Can a local cub scout pack deny a belt loop? My pack has decided that it is too good for the video game belt loop – can they do that?
