“Get Out!” 2009

In 2008 I read about this joint Girl Scout/Cub Scout/Boy Scout recruiting event to be held in Meridian, Mississippi. Since I had become District Membership Chair, I thought having a similar recruiting event here would be an idea worth exploring. Our council thought it was worth trying, and the local girl scout council also thought it was a good idea.

We decided to call it “Get Out!” with the theme of getting kids into the outdoors. The plan was to have Girl Scout troops, Cub Scout packs, and Boy Scout troops (who were interested in recruiting) put on an interesting activity or demonstration so that visitors could see some of the outdoor fun that can be had in scouting.

We encouraged them to bring some flyers to promote their pack or troop.

So how did it go? I think it was a successful first effort.  We had people from a few Girl Scout troops, Cub Scout packs, and Boy Scout troops participating.  There were quite a few families there who seemed to be having a very good time eating hot dogs and cobbler, making homemade ice cream in bags, doing nature scavenger hunts, and petting snakes.  And we had a few new kids sign up as Cub Scouts and Girls Scouts.

I was hoping that we would have more people from the community attending than we did. We had sent out press announcements to all the local media outlets.

One factor working against us promotion-wise is that this is the opening weekend of our local area fair.

Everyone I spoke to seemed happy with the event and said they hope we will do it again next year. I hope we will too.

Over the past few years, Chief Seattle Council has developed a very effective scouting marketing campaign for their council with the theme of “words to live by.” They have used the campaign in conjunction with their council’s joinscouts.net recruiting website.

Now, BSA National has announced that it will soon be launching a new national recruitment campaign using the “words to live by” theme. The website says that the campaign will give scouting professionals and volunteers the right tools to find and create tomorrow’s leaders.”

Three Fires Council Hiking Program

3-fires-hiking

Three Fires Council has a great Cub Hiking Program.  It encourages packs to have a Saturday hike each month, to keep track of each boy’s miles hiked, and to do recognition (such as a patch) at each hiking milestone.

The suggested hikes are usually two to four miles each.

There are many benefits to a Cub Scout hiking program including:

  • Recruitment and retention. Most boys who join Cub Scouting are looking for opportunities to do cool things in the outdoors like camping and hiking.
  • Physical Fitness. Many kids do not get much outdoor exercise. Cub Scout hiking is a great way to stay in shape.
  • Exposure to Nature. When boys spend time on the trail, their knowledge and appreciation of nature will increase.
  • Preparation for Boy Scouts. Webelos Scouts who have been on a significant number of hikes have an easier time adjusting being in a troop than those who have not.

Here is the 2007 “Let’s Hit the Trail” Scouting Magazine article about the Three Fires Council hiking program. Link

And here are the shorter (link) and longer (link) pdf packets from Three Fires Council describing the hiking program.
