Pinewood Derby Inventor Passes

July 14, 2008 5:11 am

In 1953 in Manhattan Beach, California, Pack 503c Cubmaster Don Murphy developed a small wooden car race for his pack. He was motivated to do so because his ten-year-old son was too young to participate in the soap box derby.

Since then there have been about 90 million Pinewood Derby cars made, and Pinewood Derby continues to be one of the most popular and exciting aspects of Cub Scouts.

Don Murphy passed away this past week at the age of 90.

Pinewood Derby Schematic Youth T-Shirts

I think these Pinewood Derby schematic t-shirts ($7.99) available from BSA National look pretty cool, and I bet a lot of boys would get a kick out of having one.

(Unfortunately, the graphic at scoutstuff.org is pretty small and doesn’t show much detail of the schematic. If I can get hold of a larger graphic, I will get it posted.)

These are only available in youth sizes, but I know a number of adults who would probably enjoy a shirt like this. Link

Pinewood Derby Home Depot Assistance

Hardware stores like Home Depot or Lowe’s often are willing to help out Cub Scout Packs with getting a basic shape cut out of the Pinewood Derby block.

Whether you have a Pack volunteer cutter or a Home Depot night, having some assistance available for cutting a basic shape out of the wood block (for those parents, like myself, who aren’t great with wood-cutting tools) can be very helpful with increasing participation in your Pack’s Pinewood Derby.

By the way, Home Depot also has a program where they will teach kids some basics about tools, building, gardening, etc. which can make for a fun and informative field trip. Link

Pinewood Derby Volunteer Cutter

January 9, 2008 5:13 am

Here is something that has been very helpful for our Pack Pinewood Derby. Many parents (including myself) aren’t great with wood-cutting tools. In our Pack we get a volunteer parent to cut a basic shape (usually just a simple wedge) out of the block of wood for those parents who need some assistance. They write their son’s name on the bottom of the block and give it to the volunteer who cuts it and returns it a week or two later. Then the scout and his parent can attach the wheels, paint it, etc. Since we have been doing this, we have had almost all our scouts participating in our Pinewood Derby each year which has been great.
