Since January of this year, our pack has made a point of having either a campout or Saturday hike every month. So far it has worked out great for us. The boys and families are very excited about it, and they are getting a lot of experience with trails and being in nature.
It has been a lot of fun for us, and it has helped with recruiting and retention.

The website enature.org has a fish identification guide which looks pretty useful. To identify a particular kind of freshwater fish, you first choose one of the listed categories (e.g., “Trouts and Salmons”), and then you look at the photos and descriptions of the various fish of that type.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has a page at its website devoted to helping children and families get more acquainted with nature. It discusses many of the benefits for kids and their families of spending more time in the outdoors. It has a number of suggested natural settings one can visit such as a national wildlife refuge.

April 22 is Earth Day. Earth Day is a great time to do conservation service projects and to show kids the importance of being good stewards of our planet.
My pack will be doing a neighborhood litter clean up this week.
If your pack has conservation activities planned for this week, you may want to use this Earth Day patch to reward participation. They are $.99 each from BSA National. Link
Did you know the federal government has an Earth Day website? Earthday.gov is a “cooperative effort across the entire U.S. government” which brings together a variety of ecology information resources. Link
