Word search puzzles are a lot of fun. To solve a word search puzzle, one must find hidden words from a given list in a grid of jumbled letters.  The letters of each word to be found will be arranged in order and in a straight line. The letters may be arranged forward or  backward, up or down, or diagonally.

Here are some websites you can use for free to create your own customized word search puzzles:

Shown above is a word search puzzle containing the following words:  keep, it, simple, make, fun, kismif, awesome, cub, scouting.

Anagrams

Anagrams are cool. An anagram is a rearrangement of the letters of a word or phrase to form a new word or phrase using each letter exactly once.

For example, you can rearrange the letters of “William Shakespeare” and get “I am a weakish speller.”

Here are other examples:

  • Apple Macintosh — Laptop machines
  • Old England — Golden land
  • Life insurance — I rule finances

And here are some anagram website links:

Palindromes

Palindromes are a lot of fun. A palindrome is a word or phrase that has the same spelling backwards. (Variation in spacing and punctuation are permitted.)

Some examples of palindromic words are: radar, rotor, and level.

Here are a few palindromic phrases:

  • “Was it a rat I saw?”
  • “Sit on a potato pan, Otis.”
  • “Rats live on no evil star.”

And then there is my favorite: “A man, a plan, a canal: Panama!”

Indoor Game Night

One of the sad realities of today’s world is that many kids seem to think the only way to have fun playing a game is with a computer or a video game controller.

Kids who never play board or card games miss out on a lot. I believe board and card games involve the brain more than video games.  And there is more social interaction with board and card games since the players are actually looking at each other rather than simply staring at a video screen.

Those are some of the reasons why I think it is a good idea for Cub Scout packs or dens to have at least one indoor game day each year.

Our pack had our indoor game night this past Tuesday, and it went very well. We had Chess, Trouble, Jenga, jigsaw puzzles, and lots of other fun games going on with all our dens.

(The above “Game Night” patch is available from Advantage Emblem for $2.00 (discounts for quantity) plus shipping.)

A-MAZE-ing Games – Official Theme Description

November 14, 2008 5:32 am

schonbusch4

The January 2009 Cub Scout Monthly Theme is A-MAZE-ing Games.”

Here is the official BSA theme description:

“January is a good time for indoor fun. Make and solve puzzles. Stump your friends with riddles. Build a maze, do crossword puzzles, and word searches.

Have a pack games night in which your family joins in for relays, board games, and other cooperative games. Play Cub Scout Jeopardy; how much do you know about Cub Scouting?

Rediscover some of the games that your parents and your grandparents could have played and work on the Heritages belt loop and pin. Discuss why playing by the rules is important.

The pinewood derby is a good opportunity to learn about rules and good sportsmanship. Why not work on the Chess belt loop and pin.”  [bold added]
