Wastewater Treatment Plant Tour

Our pack took a field trip to our local wastewater treatment plant this week. (It fit in with July’s “H20hhh!” theme.)

It might sound like an odd place to go for a Cub Scout field trip, but it was really pretty neat. Sure, it doesn’t smell like a rose garden, but “gross” places often have an extra appeal for boys.

We got to see lots of machines, tanks, pools, pipes, and sludge. And we learned about the process of taking raw sewage and turning it into water that can be returned to the environment.

June 2008 Cubcast (July “H2Ohhh!” Info)

The June 2008 Cubcast from BSA National is now available (free). It has ideas for den meetings and more utilizing the July “H2Ohhh!“ theme as well as information about the importance of keeping kids safe on the internet.

The July 2008 (“H2Ohhh!“) Den Meeting in a Box is now available from BSA National for Tiger, Wolf, or Bear den meetings. It is $37.49 and includes ten Aloha Hawaii booklets and ten monthly theme patches. (Photo not yet available.)

Buckeye July 2008 (H2Ohhh!) Packet

Simon Kenton Council’s Buckeye District roundtable packet for July (”H2Ohhh!“) is now available for download. Buckeye District does a great roundtable packet each month, and they are kind enough to let all of us download it for free. This one has games, cooking ideas, crafts, songs, skits, ceremonies, and more.

DLTK Rainbow Fish Craft

DLTK’s Crafts for Kids website has instructions on doing this rainbow fish craft which would probably be a fun project for your Tigers or Wolfs. The site even has a template.

June 2008 Baloo’s Bugle (July “H2Ohhh!” Info)

The June 2008 Baloo’s Bugle (by “Commissioner Dave”) is now available. It has lots of games, skits, ceremonies, puzzles, crafts, and other ideas for den and pack meetings for the July 2008 monthly theme (“H2Ohhh!”). It also has some helpful information about BSA water safety rules.

For Webelos Scout den meetings, it also has activities for the Aquanaut and Geologist Webelos activity badges.

eNature.org Fish Guide

The website enature.org has a fish identification guide which looks pretty useful. To identify a particular kind of freshwater fish, you first choose one of the listed categories (e.g., “Trouts and Salmons”), and then you look at the photos and descriptions of the various fish of that type.
